2027 Volkswagen Atlas Debuts as a Sleeker, Smarter Three-Row Family Hauler

Volkswagen pulled the sheet off its second-generation flagship SUV in New York, and the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas looks like a serious step up for the brand’s three-row workhorse. With a fresh face, a more powerful turbo four, an upgraded platform, and a cabin that finally feels worthy of the word “premium,” the Atlas is gunning for rivals like the redesigned Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.

  • New 2.0-liter EA888 Evo5 turbo makes 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque
  • Built on the upgraded MQB Evo platform with a redesigned interior featuring real wood trim
  • Goes on sale in the United States in fall 2026, with a hybrid arriving at the midcycle refresh

A Bolder Face for VW’s Family SUV

After a string of teasers, Volkswagen finally pulled the wraps off the 2027 Atlas in New York. This is the second generation of the SUV, following the original that arrived back in 2017. The new model keeps roughly the same footprint as the outgoing version, with identical width, wheelbase, and height. It’s an inch longer though, and the redesigned sheet metal gives it a much bolder presence.

Up front, you’ll find double-stacked LED headlights and a masked upper grille. Double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge come standard on all trims except the base model. Illuminated door handles are on the options list, as are puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern. Buyers also get three new paint choices in Sacramento Green, Sandstone, and Blackberry, plus fresh aluminum-alloy wheels in 20- and 21-inch sizes. Base models ride on 18-inch wheels.

More Power From a Familiar Engine

The 2027 Atlas is built on the upgraded MQB Evo architecture, which keeps the cabin roomy. Under the hood sits the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, making 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’s 13 hp more than the outgoing model and the most an Atlas has ever made. VW expects better fuel economy than before, too.

As in the previous generation, an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, while Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 pounds for models with a factory-installed trailer hitch, and payload is unchanged. One big shift for powertrain shoppers: for 2027, the German automaker simplified its lineup by officially dropping the V6. A hybrid variant is planned to arrive with the midcycle refresh.

A Cabin That Actually Feels Premium

The biggest leap is inside. The cabin has an organic feel with wave-like patterns and real wood textures. Three interior palettes are available, ranging from gray to black to wine. Higher trims get supple Nappa or Varenna leather upholstery. Real wood decor is standard across the lineup, which isn’t something you expect to write in a sentence about a mainstream family SUV.

Tech gets a serious refresh too. A 15-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard on all trims except the base model, which gets a 12.9-inch unit. Every version includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. A new Driver Experience Dial in the center console controls audio volume, drive modes, and the Atmospheres feature. The console also fits two phones side by side for Qi2 wireless charging, and seven USB-C ports are sprinkled throughout the cabin.

Comfort gets attention too. There are new air vents in the B-pillars along with available second-row seat ventilation. Drivers benefit from a revised 12-way ergonomic seat with improved four-way lumbar support on all models. On upper trims, drivers get thigh support, and four-way massage is available on both front seats.

Safer, Smarter, and Family-Ready

A new front center airbag brings the total to seven, and the Atlas adds refinements to the standard suite of IQ.DRIVE driver assistance tech. Travel Assist, which enables semi-automated hands-on driving, has been upgraded to allow driver-initiated lane changes, and Emergency Assist can now guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency. New standard family-friendly goodies include a power liftgate, rear sunshades, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear park distance control.

When to Expect It in Showrooms

The 2027 Atlas goes on sale in fall 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to launch. It will continue to be assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which keeps the SUV tied to VW’s American manufacturing footprint. For families weighing a Telluride, Palisade, or Grand Highlander, the Atlas is finally bringing the kind of cabin quality and standard kit that makes the comparison a fair fight. The wait until fall 2026 will feel long for anyone shopping right now, but the refreshed formula looks promising on paper.
