2019 BMW X2 M35i Interior Exterior Review

Powered by BMW’s most powerful four-cylinder engine!

The BMW X2 M35i is the top-range version of the X2 mini SUV slot between the familiar X1 and X3. Improved crossover arrives in 2018, less than a year after X2 begins production. The X2 M35i anticipates the arrival of Audi SQ2 and potential competitors that will soon be launched by Mercedes-Benz.

Following in the footsteps of X3, X2 spawned a M-prepped version with higher performance. The big news here is that the M35i hid the first four-cylinder engine modified by the M Performance division under the hood. The X2 M35i is also the most powerful four-cylinder model conceived by BMW so far. I think this makes the fact that the M35i is only X2 with the M Sport Package inside and out. However, let’s find out more about that in the review below.

2019 BMW X2 M35I EXTERIOR

• M Sport package
• Cerium Gray Trim
• Larger Exhaust Pipe
• Bumper Sporty
• Dull Rear Apron
• 19-Inch Wheels Bespoke
• Optional 20-inch rollers

That’s because the SUV that is slightly amplified is actually based on X2 with the M Sport Package, with a little detail that distinguishes it.

The bumper is the exact copy that came with the M Sport Package, including triangle side vents, foglamps placed in corners, and a large opening in the center. This latter feature revises the trim on each side, so the lower opening is narrower.

You might also notice that the trim on the kidney grille and air holes is a little darker. That’s because chrome is usually replaced with Cerium Gray finishing. Call it a compromise between the standard chrome model trim and the dark element on the car M.

To the side, additional features are limited to the Cerium Gray mirror cover and a 19-inch M Sport set, lightweight alloy wheels. Optionally, you can use a larger 20-inch roller with a Cerium Gray accent.

Interestingly enough, it’s not as easy as a diffuser element like from the M Sport Package. On the other hand, the exhaust tip, also finished in Cerium Gray, is slightly larger.

• M Sport package
• Steering Wheel M
• Sportier seats
• Carbon-Look Trim
• Three Choice of Upholstery
• “M35i” Door Frame
• Optional Technical Features

The interior is also based on the M Sport Package, so don’t be surprised if you can’t see too much difference when comparing photos
.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a flat bottom like a full M model. You and your front passenger will be treated to the M Sport front seat with integrated headrests to increase lateral support and increase comfort.

BMW offers three different designs for seats. There is a combination of FabricTrigon and Alcantara in black with blue accents, Dakota Magma red leather with holes with black highlights, and Dakota Black leather with holes. Fortunately, the seat trim extends to the lower dash and the middle door panel, so the Magmared option adds bright colors to the surface as well. The move was welcomed by the usual and boring black trim found in the M model. Adjusting the seat belt in the M design is also available with each option.

So is there a feature that distinguishes the M35i from X2 with the M Sport Package? Only one, in the written form “M35i” in the doorway.

Most technology features remain optional for this version, so you have to pay extra to get a colorful head-up display, BMWConnectedDrive, the new BMW Connected App, and a driver assistant system such as jam jam assistant and parking assistant.

• Upgraded 2.0-Liter Four-Cylinder
• 306 Horsepower
• 332 Pound-Feet Of Torque
• 0 To 62 Mph In 4.9 Seconds
• Top Speed At 155 Mph
• Stiffer Suspension
• Bigger Brakes
• Differential At The Front Axle

Specifically, this engine was retuned by M Performance and it’s the first four banger from the high-performance division. It’s also the most powerful four-cylinder engine with a BMW badge as of 2018.

Specifically, the powerplant cranks out 306 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. This model, which comes with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of tap. That’s extra 78 horses and 74 pound-feet that enable the X2 to hit 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, a second and a half quicker than the xDrive28i version.

As you might have already guessed, the X2 M35i features an xDrive all-wheel-drive system as standard and sends power to the ground through an eight-speed, Steptronic automatic transmission. The gearbox features specific M Performance tuning and a Launch Control system for quicker off-the-line sprints. Top speed is limited to 155 mph as usual.

For even sportier setup, BMW offers an adaptive suspension with two manually adjustable modes. The mini SUV is fitted with M Sport differential. But unlike in other M cars, BMW installed it in the front axle, a first for an M Performance vehicle. The system works like any other differential by reducing possible losses on the front wheels during sport maneuvers.

A more powerful vehicle needs better brakes too. BMW acted accordingly and added an M Sport braking system with fixed calipers in Dark Blue metallic. These work in conjunction with 18-inch steel discs up front and 17-inch front discs to the rear.

2019 BMW X2 M35I PRICES

The information is not yet available, but it’s safe to assume that the M35i will cost more than the xDrive28i version. The latter starts from $ 38,400, so the M-prepped crossover could retail from around $ 48,000. This estimate is the difference between the corresponding versions of the bigger X3.
